The U.S. has put “far too little” focus on hacking targets.
On Wednesday, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray told the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party that Chinese hackers are positioned to “wreak havoc and cause real-world harm” to the citizens of the United States.
“China’s multi-pronged assault on national and economic security make it the defining threat of our generation,” the FBI director said. He testified that hackers target critical infrastructure, including water treatment plants, the electrical grid, natural gas and oil pipelines, and transportation systems, telling the legislators that there has been “far too little” focus on what is happening.
“The PRC’s cyber onslaught goes way beyond prepositioning for future conflict,” Director Wray said. “Today, and literally every day, they’re actively attacking our economic security, engaging in wholesale theft of our innovation, and our personal and corporate data. … And they don’t just hit our security and economy. They target our freedoms, reaching inside our borders, across America, to silence, coerce, and threaten our citizens and residents.”
He added, “The risk that poses to every American requires our attention—now!”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Director Wray as he heads the FBI and urges increased protections against hackers of infrastructure.
- For members of the federal legislature to be discerning regarding their roles in safeguarding the nation’s security and economy.
